The 10-second habit before Tree Pose

What baseball’s best hitters can teach you about balance — and what they can’t

Research for our upcoming STEADY program has me reading a lot of things that aren't yoga. This week it was…baseball.

Not typically where the algorithm lets me wander. But the detour led somewhere legitimate: a 2017 eye-tracking study on 58 professional hitters found that the ones who shifted their gaze more often between the pitcher and home plate before the pitch — not the ones who locked in and stared — tended to have better batting averages. A real study, not an internet stat dressed up to sound smart. So naturally, I wanted to steal it for balance work.

My first instinct was wrong, and I think it's worth walking through why, because the wrong version and the right version teach two different lessons.

The wrong version

The tempting takeaway is: "shifting focus makes you better, so shift your gaze during a balance pose." I almost wrote that blog post. It falls apart under about ten seconds of scrutiny.

A fixed gaze point — a drishti — is one of the oldest tools in balance work for a reason. Give your visual system a stable anchor and your body sways less. Take that anchor away mid-pose and you're not gathering better information, you're removing your most reliable input. That's harder, not smarter. Asking someone to shift their eyes during Tree Pose is asking their nervous system to gather new information and stabilize at the same time — two jobs that compete with each other.

Where the batting research actually applies

Here's the detail that makes the analogy work: the shifting happens before the pitch. Once the ball leaves the pitcher's hand, the hitter locks on and tracks it. The gaze-shifting isn't the skill that produces the hit — it's the setup phase. It's the batter surveying the field of information available before the moment where stability and commitment take over.

That's a sequence, not a simultaneous act. And a sequence translates cleanly to balance work.

The practice: Scan, Then Settle

Phase 1 — Scan (10–15 seconds, before you lift a foot) Standing on both feet, let your gaze move deliberately across three or four points around you: the floor near your standing foot, a spot at eye level, your hands, a point behind you. You're not looking for anything in particular. You're taking inventory — where's my base, where's my eye-level reference, what's in my periphery — the same way a hitter surveys the pitcher and the plate before committing to anything.

Phase 2 — Settle (the actual hold) Lift into Tree Pose or a single-leg stance and pick one of the points you just scanned. That's your drishti now. Hold there. This is the "ball's been released" phase — information-gathering is done, and the job is stability.

The scan doesn't make the hold easier in the moment. What it does is give your nervous system a better map before you ask it to hold still — which, if the batting research is any guide, may matter more than we give it credit for.

Elite hitters don't stare at one thing the whole time. They scan first, then they lock in. Balance work can use the same order of operations.

Try This

Before your next Tree Pose or single-leg stance, spend 10 seconds scanning three points in your space before you settle your gaze on one. Notice if the hold feels any different when your eyes have already done their homework.
