Static vs. Dynamic Stretching: The Question Isn't Which, It's When
Both do real work. Most people are using them in the wrong order — and there's a third option typically unnamed
A few weeks ago I wrote about yin yoga and fascia — specifically, why the "three to five minutes releases your fascial adhesions" pitch doesn't survive contact with the evidence, and what's actually happening during a long passive hold instead.
That post was aimed squarely at yoga people. This one isn't.
The two mechanisms I laid out there — viscoelastic creep and altered stretch tolerance — don't belong solely to yin, or to yoga, or to anything with a Sanskrit name attached. They're what happens to any human tissue held at end range for a while. Which means they're also what happens when a runner drops into a hamstring stretch in a parking lot at 6 a.m., or when a lifter props a heel on a bench between sets, or when someone hangs in a quad stretch on the first tee.
So let's take those same mechanisms and ask a different question. Not does this remodel tissue — we settled that. Instead: given what a stretch actually does, when in your day should it happen?
Two Tools, Not Two Camps
Static stretching means holding a muscle at end range without movement. Dynamic stretching means moving actively through a range — leg swings, walking lunges, controlled rotation, arm circles.
They aren't rival philosophies and one isn't the sophisticated version of the other. Almost every argument I've watched people have about stretching turned out to be an argument about timing that nobody bothered to label correctly.
Static Stretching Right Before Activity: What Changes
This one has been studied a lot, and the results line up pretty consistently.
Researchers take a group of people, have them do a long static stretch, then immediately test something like a vertical jump, a sprint, or a max lift. Compare that against the same people doing no stretching, or moving dynamically instead. The stretched group tends to come out slightly behind — a little less force, a little slower off the mark, in the muscle they just stretched. It's been repeated across enough different sports and testing setups that it's one of the more settled findings in the area.
To be clear about the scale here: the difference is small, and it wears off. Nobody is getting injured because they stretched their calves before a jog. But it's worth noticing what you're getting for those thirty seconds. You spent your warm-up making a muscle slightly less ready for the specific thing you're about to ask of it.
Go back to the mechanisms from the yin piece and it makes sense. Viscoelastic creep gives you a temporary "give" in the tissue. Altered stretch tolerance turns down the nervous system's protective alarm. Both are useful in the right context, but neither is what you want thirty seconds before a heavy set.
What a Dynamic Warm-Up Buys You Instead
Moving through a range, rather than parking at the end of one, does three things at once: It warms the tissue up, it gets your nervous system firing in the specific coordination you're about to need, and it lets your body run a rehearsal of the movement before the real version shows up.
That last part is worth sitting with. Your body performs a movement better when it's done that movement recently — not in some mystical sense, just because the coordination is fresh and the tissue is warm. That's the whole assignment before activity. Not making a muscle longer. Making it ready.
It doesn't need to be elaborate or long:
Before a run — leg swings front-to-back and side-to-side, walking lunges, a few high-knee walks. Two or three minutes covers it.
Before lifting — the movement itself, unloaded or lightly loaded. Bodyweight squats before you squat. The empty bar.
Before golf, tennis, pickleball — controlled thoracic rotation, arm circles, half a dozen slow half-speed swings.
Before a fast-moving yoga class — this counts too. Cold hamstrings in an unheated vinyasa room is not a badge of anything.
One principle underneath all of it: whatever you're about to do, do a smaller, slower, lighter version of it first.
Where Static Stretching Earns Its Keep
After activity. Or on its own, with its own dedicated slot in the week, rather than tacked onto the front of a workout as filler.
Tissue already warm, nothing about to be demanded at speed, no force production on the line. That's the window where a long hold does real work — and where, over months of repetition, the altered-stretch-tolerance adaptation genuinely accumulates into range you keep.
The stretch was never the problem. Rather, trying to use a recovery tool to do a warm-up's job is the problem.
The Third Option: A Static Shape That Doesn't Behave Statically
The part I care most about is also the part left out of the static-versus-dynamic conversation almost every time.
A stretch only behaves like a static stretch when the breath is doing nothing. Remove the breath and you get exactly the scenario the research describes: parked at end range, tissue pinned, nervous system quieted at the worst possible moment.
But in SAAL Yoga the breath is the instruction, not just the ambient background noise.
You come into a shape, and rather than sinking and staying, the breath runs a small ongoing negotiation — ease back slightly, ease in slightly, again, and again. From across the room it may look like a hold. Inside your body, you're cycling load into and out of a range, under control, repeatedly.
I promise this isn’t a just a matter of semantics here. Tissue that's being asked and released is under a different demand than tissue that's being pinned, and your nervous system responds accordingly. It's a dynamic stretch in a static shape — and it means the same posture has a dual purpose, depending on how you breathe through it.
Which is exactly what the yin post ran into from the other direction. There, the problem with passive end-range holding was that it strips away muscular support at the moment a compromised spine most needs it. Same underlying issue here, different consequence: without the breath and the engagement it drives, a shape stops doing anything you can steer.
What This Means for You
If you're already in Fundamentals: the breath cueing you've been practicing is the mechanism behind all of this. You may have read a headline about static stretching and wondered whether the long-held shapes in the program contradict it. They don't, because you were never doing the version being studied.
What's worth adding now is intent. Start noticing whether a given shape is preparing tissue or restoring it, and let your breath rhythm follow. Preparation runs shorter and more cyclical. Restoration runs longer and slower. Same shape, different job — and you already have the tool to switch between them.

Try This Now
Take a stretch you'd normally sink into and hold — a seated forward fold, a low lunge, a figure 4.
Come to the first point of honest sensation, not all the way to your edge. The first real signal your body sends out..
On the inhale, ease back out of it slightly. Give the tissue a small retreat instead of demanding it stay at its limit.
On the exhale, allow the breath to draw you a little further in.
Back out on the inhale. Deeper on the exhale. Five or six rounds, letting the range build gradually rather than claiming all of it in the first ten seconds.
The shape never changed. What changed is that you stopped holding a position and started working it.
